abstract

objective(s) this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of niacin on glucocorticoid-induced dyslipidemia and fatty liver in rats. materials and methods twenty four adult male rats were divided randomly into four equal groups: 1- normal saline (control), 2- dexamathasone 0.125 mg/kg/day, i.m., 3- dexamathasone + niacin 200 mg/kg/day, oral gavages, 4- niacin. after 2 weeks, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, hdl-c, ldl-c and vldl-c concentrations were assayed and liver sections examined for fatty liver changes. data were analyzed by anova method and         p< 0.05 was considered significant. results dexamethasone increased all lipid parameters as compared to control (p< 0.05). lipid parameters in group 3, were lower than group 2 (p< 0.05) except for hdl-c which remained statistically the same. moderate fatty liver changes were observed in one third of rats in dexamethasone group. rats in groups 1, 3 and 4 had no sign of fatty changes. conclusion niacin positively affects glucocorticoid-induced dyslipidemia and fatty liver changes in rats.

Niacin Ameliorates Hypercalciuria and Hyperphosphaturia Due to Glucocorticoid Administration in Rats

Hypercalciuria and hyperphosphaturia are present in long term and high dose regimens of glucocorticoid therapy. This study aims to evaluate the effect of niacin at its pharmacological dose on calcium and phosphate disturbances due to methylprednisolone administration in growing rats. Twenty one rats were randomly divided into three equal groups and treated as follows for 4 weeks: 1-Normal salin...

Niacin in Rats

We have previously reported that the administration of a large amount of di(n-blltyl)phthalftte (DBP) increased the conversion ratio of tryptophan to niacin in rats. In the present experiment, the effect of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) on the conyersion ratio and how altering the conversion ratio of tryptophan to niacin depended on the concentration of DEHP were inyestigated to elucidate th...

Oral administration of Teucrium polium extract ameliorates ovalbumin-induced allergy in rats

Introduction: There are about 120 million people around the world who suffer from allergies. This is a huge number and all these individuals currently use anti-allergic drugs that are associated with numerous side effects. In order to find an appropriate complementary drug from traditional folk medicine, Teucrium polium was examined. Prednisolone was used as a control anti-allergic drug. Me...

S-Nitrosoglutathione administration ameliorates cauda equina compression injury in rats.

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) causes ischemia, inflammation, demyelination and results in dysfunction of the cauda equina (CE), leading to pain and locomotor functional deficits. We investigated whether exogenous administration of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), an endogenous redox modulating anti-neuroinflammatory agent, hastens functional recovery in a CE compression (CEC) rat model. CEC was indu...
